User popover UI/UX suggestions

  • That layout is quite fancy and I’ve seen sites employing such visuals in other places such as the message sidebar. Chinese/Taiwanese sites are notorious for doing this because of the short “words” (in terms of width).

The drawback of this approach is that it does not play nicely with 2 or 4+ metrics. In a default setup of just the Core you would have just “Reputation” and “Points”. If you add the forum and the calendar you now have 4 metrics that you would like to show. Add in the gallery and you suddenly have to put in 5.

So you need to be able to configure it as an admin to display what you want. Oh, and it needs to somehow updates itself when one thing is removed. What happens if the user has no posts, but 5 gallery images? Show that counter instead because it has some value unlike “0 posts”? How should it work with communities that do not put an emphasis on post counters and want to hide it. So you now need to make it possible to disable one of those counters.

You suddenly end up with a metric ton of extra logic and configurable options for such a tiny feature that is basically just some eye candy. This is what makes designing such components hard because of all the edge cases and different requirements you have to take into account.

But what’s the difference to the current state? :/

  • While this looks quite nice, these overlays really shouldn't be too high. Otherwise, they will only become even more annoying than overlays already are. The goal should still be to provide a compact overview of relevant information, not to display the complete profile. I would argue that these overlays already contain too much information in the current implementation. I absolutely welcome a visual modernization. But preferably in conjunction with a reduction, not further bloating.
