Writing articles is a little bit pain with the limited editor features

    WoltLab Suite Core

    Hi :)

I have been using WoldLab as a forum for about 5 years. No complaints. I always have recommended it to customers or friends.

    BUT !

Recently I have started a new website and I am using the combination of the forum and the core (articles). I have to say I have double feelings about it!!!

One part which I hate is images !!!!

There is no option to resize the images ... something like we have in WordPress.. this would be a great addition for the content. not even if I edit the source code and set the "width", it would not work.

I think it would be great if you pay a little more attention to the article side of the suite as well.

(sorry if I have missed something.. I would appreciate if you guide me if I am wrong).

    Thank you.

  • Thank you for your reply,

But I would completely disagree. Because if I use an 400px image as it is, it would look horrible on retina and 4K displays. Even in Xenforo this function exist and make the life way easier. I believe in 2020 it should be a part of all CMSs.

  • Yes, i know this function in XenForo (and some other systems). Ok, 400 px would be a little bit "small, rough", I agree.

If you are the Admin and Author of articles, you could select e.g. 800 x 600 as a "good size". Or 1024 x 768 or something like that. Depending on the type of photo.

But maybe it's a good idea to start a suggestion-thread for this feature.

  • Than you all for your replies.

Yes, CSS is the only option but the problem is it really cuts the flow when you are writing an article. To go and give a class to your image. It should be automated through the editor. I really do not see any reason not to have it.

We even have it in default WP!

  • I agree... I did not want to compare Woltlab with anything. It was just more of a joke.... WP comes with (classic editor) tinymce which has this option for years.

I just want Woltlab to be better ... I don’t know if you have tried to write an article... if you would like to include some images and make the article user friendly in some cases it is really impossible.

If there is an article system -in my opinion- it should come with needed standard features for writing. If not, so why we have it in the first place?

These small touches (like the visual image resize) makes the writing experience way different.

    Hello a.chakery,

I read over twice every post in this thread ... and I definitely agree with what you said.

"Articles" is certainly not the best part of the Woltlab Suite Software Apps - "Articles" could be made to function better.

There is a significant degree of frustration when uploading images for "Articles" - and isn't just an opinion on your part.

I may be wrong in assuming this, but .....

Instead of spending time on dealing with the inadequacies of the "Article software", using the "Blog" feature will probably be a better

experience - at least that is what I am hoping for when I add the BLOG software option to my forum next month. :)

  • I struggled myself a lot with using/not-using WordPress as a main website. Having both articles and forums in the same environment is a huge advantage.

I hope WoltLab staff pay more attention to it.

Having the image resize also in the forums is an advantage too. Because I can not force people to go and use for example photoshop to resize their images!!!

Or I edit their posts or set a global size for images. This functions IS really needed.

  • Hi,

"Articles" is certainly not the best part of the Woltlab Suite Software Apps - "Articles" could be made to function better.

I think a CMS/"Articles" is often the stepchild of Forum-Suite systems. I know of other software with similar "problems" as well.

    So I believe:

I struggled myself a lot with using/not-using WordPress as a main website.

Maybe it would be a good idea to combine both systems, WP and WL.

WoltLab as the forum, WordPress as the CMS, "mainpage", whatever.

IF you are the author and admin, you don't need the (WoltLab) user-accounts in WP.

But your users can read there.

  • Well that is the main point which I used WoltLab articles because of comment integration. Unfortunately there is no bridge between these two.

And As I mentioned having the image resizing option is also needed in the forum.

It is really a pity because the article system is really good and has most basic features. But the image part id really a pain!!!

  • Unfortunately there is no commercial solution.

But believe me the article system is good enough for my purpose...

My argument is why we don’t even have the image-resizer for the forum side!

It is really a problem... specially when a forum grows and when someone would post a huge image it would really destroys the user experience.

A good example would be my post here is this forum:

    https://malwaretips.com/threads/f-secu…iscount.100697/

If I would not had been able to resize it, would looked awful as the image is really large.

II really don't know what others are coping with this!!!

Please don't mention using the thumbnails. Because that is not the same. The image size should be respective to the content.

With regard to what I stated in Post 10 above, I believe I am incorrect in mentioning "Articles" as a part of "Woltlab Suite Apps".

It actually is a feature of the main software core, not an "App".

"Blog" however is an App; and I am looking forward to purchasing it and making it a part of my current forum.

  • You can use VieCode Lexicon as article system:

    Hello -chris-,

Noticed your post regarding VieCode Lexicon; so I was curious and decided to take a look at it.

This may very well be a good alternative for other forum administrators, not just a.chakery; and I am including the possibility of using this

on my own forum. However, I will still go with my decision to have the Blog App on my forum.

  • Thank you for your suggestion. I am already using Lexicon on my other website.

I am really happy with it but it is not suitable for my purpose. Lexicon as it comes from the name it is a wiki like KB website. I need something like WP.

But still the Lexicon has the problems which we have with the WL editor and images.
