Hello,
a media provider isn't the right way,
SoftCreatR: I saw something like a link preview on your old website. Maybe this is something for you...
Please explain why a media provider isn't the right way, if the option to add media is there. It doesn't make sense to me.
The Media Provider plugin made by you does everything I hoped it would do and more. It's excellent.
If I copy an article URL from BBC News for example, it brings up a professional looking preview of that article (picture thumbnail/teaser text etc) and it looks great and inviting for the viewer to click on.
For example, the regular expression for the BBC media provider plugin is this:
http://www.bbc.com/(?<REFERENCE>[a-zA-Z0-9-/]+)
and the HTML is this:
<iframe width="400" height="500" src="http://www.bbc.com/{$REFERENCE}/embed" scrolling="no" frameborder="0"></iframe>
Why can't these be modified for any media I wish to add to the media provider collection?
-
A media provider is for media files and not for entire pages.
The link you posted provides specially embed data http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-42333519/embed
For Facebook you need a script from Facebook which tells how to display the data.
You can't simple iframe all websites. It doesn't work

So if I wanted to link preview this article https://davescomputertips.com/…our-location-on-whatsapp/ how could it be done?
-
I'm convinced that there is a way to do this, one way or the other.
I get that the Media providers plugin is only for media files, although before I went https ALL the BBC articles appeared as a preview and it was fantastic. They don't now because the BBC isn't secure, in that they are NOT https.
Anyway, if I post a link to my Facebook page it generates a preview regardless of whether it's a media link or not and that's the point I'm trying to make and if WordPress can develop a plugin for this feature, surely it shouldn't be that difficult for a WoltLab dev?
Here are a couple of links explaining how this could be done. Apparently, Facebook uses open graph meta tags to create previews.

The problem isn't the preview itself. The problem is, how to display it. The Facebook layout is perfect for this, while in a WBB, this may look ugly. A good example is, if you just post a link of a plugin like this
, just within a text. As you can see, this is not really beautiful

That doesn't come anywhere near becoming a preview, so you're not really making any effort to get your head around my request. If Facebook uses open graph meta tags, why can't a dev come up with a plugin that uses similar code just like Word Press has? Surely it can't be that difficult.
Here's a description of the Word Press plugin:
This plugin will add a button to your post/page editor which can be used to generate and embed a link preview for a given URL. The link preview consists of a title, description and image which will result in a similar look as sharing a link on Facebook.
Here's a few WP preview plugins, because there are more than one and I personally think it's a much better way to express a link, especially if you have the choice of preview or just link by use of a button.

I may take a look at that later.

It's a while since this thread was created, but I'm still keen on the idea of a link preview. I post regularly to a XenForo based forum and most links are shown as previews, simply by pasting the url into the post.
Can a plugin achieve this?
For example:
At the back of my mind I have a feeling there's something preventing this on WoltLab, but I can't remember what it is

That looks great and is exactly what I've been looking for.
Looks like I'll have to wait until 5.4 goes public though, as it appears to be in Beta 1 at the moment.
Thanks for pointing this out to me.
