In WCF 2.1 main menu items have the attribute e.g. data-menu-item="wbb.header.menu.board":
But this is not present anymore in WSC. How can modify the template so I can get the menu variable/identifier of the item as an attribute? Since templates have changed, I'm not sure I can just copy the code from WCF 2.1.

unfortunately i think you can't do that with templates on WCS..
If your goal is to change the CSS of certain menu links, you need to do that with CSS Child Selectors : https://www.w3schools.com/cssref/sel_nth-child.asp
If you choose this solution, don't forget to adapt it to the mobile menu too

Yes, that what I'm trying to do, unfortunately the nth-child approach is not what I'm looking for because I'm creating a style to be submitted to the plugin-store, and users not necessarily have the items ordered in the same way. Using the href address is not convenient either.
Ok, so unfortunately there is no "simple" solution, the only way is to create a custom plugin i think..
There is a solution that you could try : using filter and attribute jquery methods :
With this, i think you could select a certain link depedning on the title of the page (ex : Board), and add a css class to it..
