When importing data from phpBB 3.0.x some chars in nicknames are replaced with HTML entities, exactly:
& = & amp;
< = & lt;
> = & gt;
(also < and > are replaced inside forums descriptions).

I had the same issue...
Since WL couldnt find the issue I ran sql update qrys to solve it..

the issue with the names will probably be solved with the next release. Regarding the forum descriptions: The importer should automatically activate HTML mode for these. Can you double check (or provide a screenshot), please?

About forums: I did mistake in my earlier post - not forum descriptions, but forum names got that problem. It is not as critical as user names. This can be fixed manually after conversion by editing these affected names, not much work - I mentioned about it just by the way as it looks similar to user names issue
User names would be more problematic at conversion, thus @Throwholics idea is also nice - but better to have this fixed With 30k users it could affect many of them
