Microsoft Windows 10

  • I take it you're in the same boat. Welcome to The Titanic. lol

And what is the problem with that key?
    i havent read everything

The problem about that key is it's the "default key" that Microsoft uses. Which means it is in the wild and eventually will be blacklisted.

  • But I would Google search your full key, just to be sure.

Why did i do that? *sigh* Well yes, in my case its pretty normal since W 8.1 was KMS activated and its still in W10.. i do think i won't be able to use this key when i reformat...

Ah... So you had a cracked version to begin with...

It's funny that paying customers have a harder time and the pirates have it all so easy. lol

Mine was bought and paid from directly from Microsoft themselves (see screenshot). And Windows 8.1 was fully activated (see screenshot). But when upgrading to Windows 10, somehow my details are lost (doing an upgrade, not a clean install) and I'm assigned the "default key" (see screenshot).

  • I could tell you a very easy way to get a valid key if you have a PC World store near you.

They leave the product key sticker on all the computers but use a mass activation one for all the PC. So the product key on the case on display has not been activated.

Did it with Visa once after getting a key from PC World store off a new PC running Vista on display. Worked a charm... and doesn't have to be same brand computer. Use mobile phone to take a picture, lol.

That's still theft and I'm looking to use my valid, paid product as designed.

(We also have no PC World stores in America)

  • I removed Vista anyway, it was terrible, lol

This computer (HP Pavilion a6750f) originally came with Windows Vista. Once they patched it (to death), it was actually very stable. It was however very resource heavy, which is why the computer is still suitable to running Windows 10.

The only changes I've made to it over the years is took out the floppy, wifi card, and mini sd-card reader. Then replaced the power supply, old hard drive, and added a Nvidia 430 (1GB) video (plus 2 extra drives).

I long ago did a fresh install of Windows 7. From there I switched to Windows 8 and now I'm trying to get Windows 10 to work... It technically is activated, but sadly, that is activated using the generic "default key".

What should have happen if I understand correctly.... Is it should have either brought over my Windows 8 key or generated me a new Windows 10 key when upgrading. It did neither and simply pushed out the generic.

  • YOu should not say those things on "paper"....
keep it to yourself... you know its illegal...

Yes, my copy is not legal and I'm not hiding it because the worst that can happen is a deactivation. Also at the very moment i don't have any third party activation program running and its activated like any other copy. It sucks that Aslan can't activate his legit copy because 'something went wrong' with his legit key, maybe calling/mailing MS is a solution? :)

  • I'm still running Windows XP here. Ha!

I could upgrade to Windows 7, maybe even Windows 10. But kinda still like XP and have some stuff on PC used (software I bought) that isn't going to work on anything but XP. I use an old Adobe Photoshop 7.0 as well, can't afford to lose that.

I'm not the only person with this problem (thankfully).

I'm uncertain if I was successful. Here is what I know...

    • I originally had Windows 8.1 install with all my apps and settings, upgraded to Windows 10, but ended up with that "default key". Activation obviously failed.
    • I formatted my PC and installed a fresh copy of Windows 8.1 and after the install, was surprised to find a new step, automatically telling me I could get Windows 10 for free. This too gave me that "default key". Activation obviously failed.
    • I formatted my PC and installed a fresh copy of Windows 8.1 (again), but this time used the ISO to update. I was given the default key again, but activation passed.... My product ID is also different (see screenshot).

So while I am activated... I'm unsure about this.

But I do know I can format my computer right now, go back to Windows 8 and it will activate perfectly. I've been doing this a few times now. The problem is when I upgrade to Windows 10... I always end up with the "default key"

I once had my valid key blocked by MS and phoned them up and they unlocked it. Reason was, if you change hardware in the PC and reformat install it, do that a few times it makes it look like a different PC is installing same Windows with key. That is what I was told on phone because I think it send infomation about your PC (all hardware) back to them about PC it's installed on.

But think it's only certain hardware you unlikely to change, like the PSU and a few other components

That's not the issue I'm having. On this computer... I had Windows 8.1 installed and running for over a year.

And Windows 8.1 activating isn't the issue. I have no problems activating 8.1. It is only when I upgrade to Windows 10, that I'm assigned the "default key".

  • Don't know then, not sure what you mean by assigned a generic key.

If I had done a full, fresh install... And skipped the part where it asked for a key... Microsoft would use a "default key" to proceed with the installation. That would eventually need to be changed to a valid Windows 10 key.

Doing the upgrade, my Windows 8 key would either be brought over OR Microsoft would generate me a new Windows 10 key license automatically (there seems to be some confusion on which of these actually happens).

In my case, neither is happening... Windows 8 is successfully upgraded to Windows 10, but is given the "default key" as if I had done a full install without entering anything.

  • When you get given a generic key to at least install Windows 10. How long does that key last for.

As I'm just thinking I could test installing Windows 10 myself then, but I don't have any valid key for it and doubt my Windows XP key would work being carried across, no idea?
