So a simple 64 x 64 smilie ends up looking like this when added (larger than life).
This image in question is this small 64 x 64 photo.
Why it ends up looking like "King Kong" is anyone's guess... But I do not have this problem in any other development, so it's safe to call this a bug.

You could edit the SVGs to contain actual dimensions, but since they're placed on one sprite one would need to split them first. Not sure if they offer this though.

No one can confirm that except Wotlab Staff. Even on a fresh install with no modifications added, none of the header code we add to other sites on other developments, fail only to execute on Woltlab.
Hired a 3rd party Administrator to verify finding at my own cost... Could not execute header code. 
After 1 of the staff here refused to help and basically told me I was on my own. 
So until it be proven on my end, TRUE. Given this problem affect Woltlab and only Woltlab.... But I am not going to debate it.

They're not in a sprite, thankfully. 
Although I think Woltlab would do good to add Sprite support. But thankfully they're all individual...

Ip.Board moderators would mostly suggest ticket support in order to promote their premium support (thus free support was virtually non existent)
xenforo moderators were often rude, but helpful.
vBulletin moderators would defer most everyone to ticket support.
Woltlab is the only one where help was outright refused.

Nevertheless, if you want guaranteed support, the ticket system is the way to go and after all I guess you want to have it working, right? Ticket support is included, thus you might just want to claim your right and let us solve your issue
