Why is my test thread in the Hot Threads section? In my opinion, threads in this section should be based on the number of posted replies. How is it currently calculated, by the number of views or something else? In my view, hot threads should be determined by the number of posts and user activity within them.

They are, but they are also weighted based on their publication time.

This is because the last thread was created more than an hour ago, which decreases its "hotness" drastically, not factoring in when the last reply was created. Therefore, a new thread, even if it has no replies and not many views will appear "hotter" than threads that are old but actively discussed. I assume this is to promote newer and more recent discussions instead of older, ongoing discussions.
I think the formula behind it has not been updated for quite a long time. It would be better to make a suggestion so that it is re-evaluated, as the described behaviour is not a bug per se. I would agree that at least the publication date should be weighted a little less.
