what do you think about refreshing, modernizing the default style? In my opinion, a bit of freshness is missing.

How about doing this in Version 5.5.x
The "re-design" would not necessarily have to be all at once!
It could be divided into, say, three stages of development and implementation.

There will be no such change in 5.5, but the version after is likely to receive an update to the Font Awesome integration.

Agree; but perhaps if there are enough of us who want (expect it) sooner, then Woltlab may "follow through" sooner!

His statements are neither official nor does he has any knowledge whatsoever about our internal roadmap or schedule.

That is, of course, correct. But experience shows that there are no significant style changes during a major release. So far, at least, that hasn't happened. This will probably not have changed.
And at least at the moment, there are still plans for version 5.6, which will probably be released in 1 - 1.5 years. Even if there should be no more version 5.7 and version 6.0 would be developed directly afterward, this would probably take at least one more year, or longer. So my estimate is not that utopian.
Therefore: No, I don't know your plans and your internal roadmap. These are purely empirical values.

It wouldn’t be the first time that a planned version will not be released but a new major version instead, see framework version 1.2 or 3.2.

That's what I meant with "At the moment". We'll see, what happens next. But even if 6.0 would be the next version, a re-design won't happen within the next few months, but in a year or more.

However, “in a year” is completely different to your initial “3-4 years“.
