Signature Text Line becomes "striked out" after Editing Posts - Revisited

  • Affected App
    WoltLab Suite Forum

Attention Alexander Ebert: Re-opening this issue as you requested IF I noticed the problem of a "strike line" through the

"Signature" of Admin / Member re-occurring.

The somewhat annoying problem of a "strike line" appearing through the "Signature" - of either Admin or Member

of my Forum - AFTER a post has made made, then immediately Edited, has once again re-surfaced.

    Observations:

I did not notice any problems (re-occurrence) with this issue until just two days ago - in other words, it has happened since the last Update

    of Woltlab Core Suite (3.0.5).

Once a Post is made in a Thread, then edited,  then "submitted" / republished, without leaving the Thread where the Post has just been been made,

a "strike line" appears thru the Signature Line of the person (Admin or Member) who made the Post.

WITHOUT doing anything, but just leaving the Thread / Post, and going to some other part of the forum / to another thread / post, etc.,

then coming back to the Thread / Post where the "strike Line" was observed to have occurred, the "Signature" no longer has the

    Strike Line through it.

    Comment:

The "problem" or "annoyance" regarding this issue is not one that troubles me greatly because I know from experience that if I just ignore the

Strike Line thru my Signature, and go on to something else in the Forum, I know that when I come back to that Post wherein I made an Edit,

the Strike Line will not be there.

HOWEVER, to the Member who does not know this, or whom it is has happened to him / her for the "first time", it may be an issue that is either

annoying, bothersome, or even disturbing. That really is my primary reason for bringing up this issue once again - and of course, so that if any other

Woltlab Forum Software purchaser has encountered the same problem as me, that they won't get upset with Woltlab.

Currently I have a very limited membership with my Forum, so there has not been sufficient time or posts made and edited to make any

noteworthy observation of how much this issue is going to affect my members or future members.

I have added a safe-guard against selection mismatches, in particular protecting against selections that are (partly) not contained in the editor. This should hovever not be possible under normal circumstances and sounds more like a browser glitch, which browser are you using that causes these issues for you? Are there other users that have reported this problem too?

Anyway, the strike-through you're observing is only a temporary thing where the rendered page is modified by the browser, but this isn't permanent by any means. So at least it won't cause any actual changes, limiting this bug to be just a visual annoyance without affecting others in general. It's something ;)

Thank you, Alexander, for your reply!

To answer your question about which Browser I am using: Most of the time I use Mozilla Firefox, but occasionally Microsoft Edge.

In that regard, the problem of the "strike thru" occurred when using either Browser.

As for others reporting this issue, only my Moderator said he noticed the same issue/problem. He uses Firefox also.

Since first reporting this potential "bug", I have noticed the following:

This problem is NOT consistent! It does NOT occur every time there is an Edit made to a Post.

In the last two or three days, I have made Posts, Started NEW Threads, and made Posts therein, and have made Edits to the text -

and with and without links, and with other various additional data or symbols:

There have been no re-occurrences of the "strike thru" in the Signature Line.

Intermittent problems - in my experience - are always the most difficult to determine the cause of.

In fact, I'm not even able to reproduce the problem at all, which makes it extremely difficult for me to find the cause of it.

Luckily, there is only a single component that uses strike-through for internal purposes. I simply set up some additional checks there to avoid it from ever escaping the editor. It will both print an error in the console and then bails out, canceling the intended action.

If this bug occurs again after the update, it will most likely cause text formatting (color, size and family) to not work at some point, that is when the safe-guards kicked in. Hopefully this will allow us to gather more information, in particular you might remember what you've done, providing me more hints that I can use to reproduce the issue.

It's anything but a great solution, but if everything works out, we should be able to resolve the issue eventually.
