Interested - Few Questions

  • Hello,
I stopped by because a friend suggested that BB was a good forum software that could easily be expanded into a full cms suite if I wanted.

I would like to know if the database is enormous? At the present time, Xenforo has a gigantic mysql database and when I read about it, it was so that "searches were faster". I've NEVER seen a board mysql that large before.

Also, how easy is it to customize the board? How easy is it to make new pages that I can actually edit with just the wrapper around the page (like IPB)?
I am currently using wordpress for my main page. Would it be easy to customize it to look like my current site? (https://artofwargaming.net)

Are there themes that utilize a CSS Framework like bootstrap?

Thanks for your feedback and time.

I would like to know if the database is enormous?

No, the default setup has a database size of 7,8 MiB, but grows very slowly with additional content such as threads and posts. This is fairly low, especially considering that disk space today is extremely cheap, even the simplest webspace offers come with gigabytes of available space.

Also, how easy is it to customize the board? How easy is it to make new pages that I can actually edit with just the wrapper around the page (like IPB)?

The style editor features two different components: First of all it lets you customize the color schema, font usage and logos to better match your expectations. The second option allows you to directly inject custom CSS (LESS is also supported!) which in return grants you full control over the entire appearance. On top of that you can create custom templates through the ACP in order to achieve a different markup whenever required.

You can use the Fireball CMS which is an application for our framework (WCF) that can be installed together with Burning Board. Releases are available on GitHub: https://github.com/codeQuake/Fireball/releases

Creating custom pages is a core feature of the upcoming major release (currently in development, first beta estimated to be published somewhere in the 2nd half of 2016), see Outlook on the future of WoltLab Community Framework 2.2 for some more information.

I am currently using wordpress for my main page. Would it be easy to customize it to look like my current site? (artofwargaming.net)

Possible, but requires a fair amount of CSS knowledge to match the style. Some parts can be achieved with plugins, for example

provides the link collection as seen in your page's footer.

Are there themes that utilize a CSS Framework like bootstrap?

I'm sorry, but our framework provides its own CSS and is not compatible with Bootstrap.

  • Thanks for the response @'Alexander Ebert,

In regards to the CSS Framework, it's great if the board has it's own custom CSS framework. I guess I should have asked if the board came with it's own CSS Framework, which I can work with if there is documentation.

I'm also glad to hear that the board mysql size is low.

I'm interested to read more about the upcoming custom pages and the Fireball CMS.

We decided that it is finally the framework's time to shine and launched the project "Lantia": Embedding an entire CMS directly into the core, eventually granting users the ability to build their entire website without the need of poorly integrating 3rd party applications for instance having issues with shared logins, layouts barely in sync and other differences harming the user experience.

This for me is a major point as I want to move my site away from Wordpress.

Thanks for your feedback. I will be very anxious to see the release of the new product with the integrated CMS.
