Beyond Paypal ---- Stripe

    WoltLab Suite Forum

Stripe appears to be the leading competitor to Paypal. Their fees are lower (2.9% + 0.30) and they accept all major credit, debit, and pre-paid card. But more importantly they have a partnership with Apple Pay ( https://stripe.com/apple-pay ) which opens the door for more mobile users and they already have early talks with Samsung's LoopPay ( http://www.engadget.com/2015/02/18/samsung-buys-looppay/ ) regarding their Apple Pay competitor, and finally they also accept Bitcoin ( https://stripe.com/bitcoin ).

Stripe just became a contender against Paypal offering more payment options and better mobile support. They of course support both 1 time purchases and subscription payments. ;)

My suggestion is NOT to replace the current paypal integration, but rather also include Stripe integration. They make it very easy to develop for. https://stripe.com/docs

As a added bonus, they have a better policy regarding digital products and subscriptions, offering better seller protection.

  • I think, it is a good idea to integrate that, but I think, WoltLab doesn´t do that, because Stripe is not so popular in Germany.....
    We will see.....

Ironically, I became aware of Stripe because a developer in Germany used them. Best part was I wasn't required to make an account with Stripe to use it either.

YES, I know the same is true for paypal, but most people don't notice that small link telling you that you don't need to sign in or sign up, so people assume you must have an account to use it (paypal). With Stripe this wasn't an issue. :)

  • U can use PayPal without registration, too, I think ^^

Yes, you can (most of the time). But as I said, it's not self apparent. Paypal designs their order page in such away that it often gives the illusion that it is a requirement to be a member of paypal. There is that small, little link that you can click to bypass that, but most people don't notice it.

With Stripe you just go through the order more seamlessly without being discouraged thinking you need to sign up. This makes it easier for the customer giving less of an impression to require more of them, helping your sale to complete more smoothly (thus encouraging the sale). ;) That's a good thing :D

But as I said... I am not suggesting a replacement. I'm suggesting adding another alternative. ;)

Yes, that's something I had to deal with before: new members of my forum who wanted to donate often ended up contacting the admin team and ask them how they could pay without registering.

With PayPal this process isn't all that clear or intuitive. I understand that they probably want to encourage people to also register with PayPal rather than just pay through it, but still...

  • I would love a PayPal alternative to receive donations etc. There's a couple premium donation systems that I've purchased in the plugin store 10 eur each, and still can't really use either of them. X/ I would love an alternative to PayPal where you can just give a potential customer an email address (like is done with PayPal) and receive the funds into your account. Is this possible with Stripe? If not, any other providers that works similar to PayPal, that also can pay via email address? I think Skrill/Moneybookers does this too.

  • Stripe will be never secured as paypal. It takes years

I disagree. It does not take years to be secure... Do not know where you got that idea. Security can be implemented without time being a factor.

However, they have been around since 2010. That's 1/2 a decade (5 years). And their security has never been compromised, unlike paypal.

And yet again, I remind you that I am suggesting this as an alternative, not as a replacement. I believe people should have a choice.

  • it should be considered as a plugin

PayPal usually pays out within 1 business day, while Stripe takes 7 full days. If fast access to your funds is important, keep this in mind ;)

  • it should be considered as a plugin

So should paypal, but its included into the core.

That is incorrect. Stripe you can indeed be configure by you to payout daily

I think people should have choices, not everyone likes or wishes to use paypal. And if paypal is so good... I wonder why its fans are so against any alternatives.

My suggestion is not to debate which is better, nor is it to suggest to replace paypal, only to include an alternative within the core.

  • I think, there are other things, more important than a Stripe-integration for WCF....like payment by bank account for example ^^

That would still need some kind of merchant service integration, such as Stripe. Of course I'm open to alternatives. Do you have any suggestions?

Maybe because that's what the majority wants? I thought you could see that :P

(just trying to lighten up the mood with a joke. I'm not without humor either ;) )

:P Yep... I walked right into that. LoL

( Although I'm opposed to any society that would limit people's choices )
