[4.1] Notification of wall post does not go away

  • Affected App
    WoltLab Suite Forum

As the title says... Someone posted on my wall. I not only read it, but gave it a thumbs up (rated it), then replied, yet I still am told I have 1 new notification and it shows me the same thing.

  • Only way to dismiss it was to click on the "mark all as read" option (from the notification drop down menu)

Notifications usually don't get automatically marked as read, some pages (e.g. the thread page) search for related notifications and mark them as confirmed. By the way, you can mark single notifications as read if you hover the notification, the avatar will change into a tick which can be clicked on (Desktop only, mobiles don't have "hover").

Alright, that's going to be a show stopper :(

Notifications should go away once viewed. People shouldn't always need to manually dismiss them.

    That's not how

    Twitter
    Facebook
    Google+

    OR

    IP.Board
    XenForo
    phpBB (3.1)
    vBulletin
    WordPress

I know of nothing that functions like that either on forums or even social media. Once you view the notification source .... ie... X tells you about Y, so you go visit Y ... It is dismissed.

To force someone to manually dismiss it would not be intuitive to any standard.

We're planing on adding proper auto-marking as read on the remaining pages, it will most likely be added in the next days. There are still some minor issues with the editor I want to resolve first.

By the way, XenForo (and possibly other) work different, it just marks all notifications as read once you open the alert dropdown, good luck finding the notification that you have not yet read.

@Alexander Ebert Why don't link all notifications to index.php?ConfirmNotification?id=X, mark the notification as confirmed (and also another notifications from the same object type - like a quote and a answer to the same thread) and then redirect the user to the actual place where the notification took place.

    No, that's …

    Wait, it's not that …

Screw me, why didn't I thought of that in the first place?

I have thought about it and I think I can solve it by using JavaScript to manipulate the displayed links, thus I can change the URL if a notification is outstanding. Again, I have some other things to do in the meantime, then I'll get back to this.

Edit: @Christopher Walz No need to mark notifications of the same type as marked, one can find exactly the items that are related to the object one is viewing. In fact they're not of the same type, but share some distinct details which can be used to draw a connection.

This is now how it was working before. Before, when you visited X notice, it was dismissed. Now I seem to have to manually dismiss everything.

As for XenForo, all notices are saved in the notice page. Those not already viewed show a yellow * symbol indicated it as unviewed.

  • As long as I have notifications for likes which currently isn't in 4.0 and I have a history incase I want to go back to a notification because I can't remember what thread it was in then I'm happy :)

You do realize that Alexander just wrote that he is working on that?

I've applied some changes which cause the system to inject special links in outstanding notifications: They point to a new page which marks the notification as read and then forwards to the actual link. This approach has two benefits: 1) Clicking the link will mark the notification as read and 2) it is still an ordinary link with all its upsides (e.g. middle mouse button to open in a new tab, etc.).

  • Only problem is that when I click on a notification I get "The link you are trying to reach is no longer available or invalid."
