option to disable image hot linking

  • I would like an option that could disable hotlinking photos.

There are various reasons why this maybe something people want; for example, some hotlinked photo can actually slow down your site. This is because you become dependent on how quick the other site loads (not your own).

Another example is a user may end up hotlinking an innocent photo and it may change into something else... This is because you and your member (user) has no control over the source.

  • I'm currently working on a plugin. Meanwhile: ImageProxy

It you expand that and turn it into an addon that automatically uploads it and turns it into a local attachment, that would be idea.

A proxy is still dependent on the source location. It helps, but say for example 1 whole year later... The cute little bunny someone uploaded turn into a gay porn image... That's no fun.

  • It comes with a group based option set, where you can define, if and how hotlinking is allowed.

    ?? ?(

Well that was weird... Originally, there was no text in your reply, only the photo.... But after I submitted my reply, the text magically showed up. LOL :P

Still would be a proxy system and I'd rather it all local as not to take the chance.

  • You can restrict or allow hotlinking per group. If restricted, you can choose between "Whitelist" and "Blacklist" mode, while the Whitelist mode gives you the ability to define hosts, which are allowed to be hotlinked and the Blacklist provides the opposite function.

blacklist the internet (all of it).... Not sure how I could accomplish that :P

Would rather have the option to turn off hotlinking all together and have people upload. OR Have hotlink photos automatically upload.

Thats, why it has two modes ;) The Whitelist mode allows you to restrict image hotlinking completely (nor to allow specific hosts) while the Blacklist mode allows you to block specific hosts.

But they would still see the hotlink button in the editor and complain as to why they couldn't hotlink photos... So much prefer that it automatically upload all hotlink photos ;)

  • The hotlink button still allows to embed local images, so it's not completely useless ;)

However... If you prefer something else, you might to go and find someone, who does it for you. Btw... Don't forget the DMCA (or whatever controls the copyright law in your country). Because uploading images from somewhere else can be expensive ;)

I'm pretty sure, that this wont be implemented into the WCF/WBB.

Provided you take the responsible action, you have nothing to worry about.

Would still like an option to disable hotlinking in favor of uploading... Of course it should be an option.

  • If you don't want images to be hotlinked, simply disable the [img] - BBCode? That still allows users to embed images as attachments, but disables hotlinking of images from other sites.

  • Well, the Proxi Plugin does exactly what you want:
It downloads the image and store it on your server.
You can choose how long an downloaded image will stay until it will be redownloaded.
Currently the limit is 1 year, but this should be mostly enough^^
