"Information Privacy" rather than "Profile Privacy"

I've never really been a big fan of profile privacy... or rather, I'm not a big fan of how most software these days seems to implement it. You see, when you try to access a "private" profile in Burning Board (or in XenForo) this is what you'll be greeted with...

The infamous error, an error that tells you that you can't view this member's profile! Only problem is... you can still view their info on their posts and on the member cards...

Some information on a forum is essential, this includes things like usernames, postcounts, registration dates, ranks/groups and avatars. And even though everyone has access to this information, they'll still be given an error when attempting to view "private" profiles. This sort of breaks one of the key points of having profiles on forums, and that's navigation.

I think the concept of "Profile Privacy" is a bit misguided, what I'd like to see would be something more along the lines of "Information Privacy" or the ability to hide one's non-essential info and profile fields without turning one's profile into an error page. Basically something like this that shows the essential information (that's never really private and is essential to the forum) while hiding the rest of the profile and information, you know... the information that actually can be made private without breaking a forum's functionality and navigation.

This way, members who don't want their information shown will still have as much privacy as is possible without breaking functionality, and they won't be given the false idea that the profile privacy setting will hide everything about them. (Which it can't, as some information is essential to things like posts and navigation and removing it would completely break a forum's functionality.)

Really hope you all can consider this suggestion.
