feature and add-on list

  • So I need to get an idea of what addons I may need developed. Here is my list and I'll even break it down for you. If you know one or more add-ons that do the following (or at least part), let me know. It's also possible some of these are already in Woltlab Burning Board or planned and I just have missed it.

So here is the list of addons I currently use and would be happy to find out if there is something to replace them (or will I need to have them developed).

"Stay Logged In" checked by default
I assume I can do this myself with a little css work. But if there is something else required, please let me know.

    Anonymous Posting
This isn't exactly needed, but sometimes people do like to post anonymously. I can live without it though.

    Mails
This is a must... I need something that will let me use Mandrill.com as I will never, ever have a local mail server (ever). If anyone knows of such an add-on let me know. If not, look forward to this being developed and released.

    Widget Framework
What this does is it caches the sidebar and allows you to add your own widgets. It would be nice if there is an add-on like this. If not, I could live without it.

    Desktop Version For Mobiles
This provides a link which forces mobile devices (cell phones or tablets) to view the full-screen version of a responsive design. It's helpful, but not required.

    Read PM
This is a must... This basically reads personal messages (pm's). I've had issues in the past... One example is someone was sharing torrents in pm's and they obviously were not going to report themselves. This little add-on made me aware of it and so I could remove them ASAP. So for security, it's required and if no one has such an add-on, expect me to seek a developer to release it.

    [YOU] hack
This is a bb code trick where if you type [you] it displays the username of whoever views the thread. It's a cool little toy, but not needed.

    Amazon Parser
This helps add amazon referral code to any amazon url link. Not needed, but would be nice.

    Clickable Rows
This is prefered. This make the whole row clickable on a forum or thread and not just the text. Helpful for mobile devices.

    Convert Image
This is prefered... This changes hotlinked photos into attachments. Good way to make sure a photo is always there. Also saves you from having to save it on your PC, then upload it.

    Disable Invisible Status
This is prefered... I find people are less active if they think no one is online. To many people being "invisible" is not a good thing. If there is a default option to prevent people from doing that, all the better... If an add-on, also acceptable.

    Email Idle Users
This basically emails people who have not visited in X many days / weeks / months ... You can set the time. It's nice, but not required.

    Follow Me Postbit
Adds a follow link in the postbit. Not required and I am the developer of this add-on, so technically, I'm sure I can port this over myself. But if someone else has already made one... It would save me the trouble.

    Total Forum Thread Views
You know how you can see how many times a thread has been viewed? This adds that function to the forums as well. It's nice if I can have it, but not required.

This adds a "back to top" button on the side. I know WBB has those on every post, but for the few places it doesn't have it; it maybe nice. It's not required.

    Me
This is sort of a bb code trick. You ever use IRC chat? /me changes into your username. It's not required.

    Monthly Email
Automatically sends out a monthly email once a month to show all the most recent threads. Would be nice.

    Notifications
Basically lets me make my own notifications. Can even assign it to individual user groups and urls. Can see an example of my "cookie notice" on my site http://sociallyuncensored.eu It's not required, but it would be helpful.

Number of Posts to Send Personal Conversations
This is a must... Keeps spammers and general spammers from going straight to the pm box and sending out mass pm's. If there is no alternative to this, I'll seek someone to develop it.

    Password Strength Check
This tells a user when they are joining or changing their password if it's strong or not. Not exactly required, but would be nice.

    Post Ratings
Adds more ratings beyond just like or dislike. Not required, but would be nice.

    Register Timezone
This automatically detects a user's location and changed their prefered time zone for them when they first register. Not required, but would be cool to have.

    s9e Media Pack
Adds more than youtube and other video sources. This is actually free open source; so I imagine it can be ported easily. http://s9e.github.io/XenForoMediaBBCodes/configure.html

    Search Log
Allows me to see what people search for. Not required.

    Separate Sticky & Normal Threads
Suspect I can do this myself with a little css, but if someone has done it already, that would save me time.

    Set Remember Me Cookie Time
Allows me to set the cookie time and how long someone is logged in for. Good for browsers that cut things short and need settings higher.

    Show Deleted
Shows all deleted post in an easy search. Not required, but helpful.

    Sitemap generator
Makes a sitemap to submit to Google

    Contact Us
When someone uses the "contact us", this automatically turns that "contact us" into a thread in the forum of my choosing.

    Prevent double post
Helps prevent mistaken double post. Helpful, but not required.

    Report Alert
Send an email to staff when someone click the report button.

    Stop Spam Here
This is a must... Basically checks the StopForumSpam.com database when a user registers (joins). Good to prevent spammers and spam bots from joining.

    Moods
Would be nice, but not required... Displays user moods (happy, sad, relaxed, ect...).

    Link Essentials
    This does two things

    1) Changes url into a friendly formats

    example: http://www.google.com becomes Google

    2) When you hover a url it shows you a small preview images

#1 is more sought after than #2, but it would be nice to have both.

So that is my list.... Some of these may already be part of WBB and some of these may already have alternative add-ons and maybe I've overlooked a few things. But any help would be good to have. Thanks in advance :)

    • Offizieller Beitrag

This is prefered... This changes hotlinked photos into attachments. Good way to make sure a photo is always there. Also saves you from having to save it on your PC, then upload it.

Yesterday I uploaded a similar plugin in the pluginstore. This plugin caches external images in WCF and makes it available for X days. It makes sense, for example, integrate with SSL encryption so compelling images via https.

  • Read PM
This is a must... This basically reads personal messages (pm's). I've had issues in the past... Don't expect to get much appreciation for that. Not only is that a sure way to get into trouble due to privacy laws, but since this is a primarily german influenced community most people aczually think that privacy is a good thing. Sniffing through private conversations is a no-go.

"Stay Logged In" checked by default
I assume I can do this myself with a little css work. But if there is something else required, please let me know.

You can do that with a simple template change.

    Anonymous Posting
This isn't exactly needed, but sometimes people do like to post anonymously. I can live without it though.

If I am correct, @TimWolla is working on that for WCF 2.1.

    Widget Framework
What this does is it caches the sidebar and allows you to add your own widgets. It would be nice if there is an add-on like this. If not, I could live without it.

You can already create your own dashboard boxes. And there is also a plugin somewhere to create static boxes with only test inside in the ACP. It might be not in the Plugin-Store, though.

    Convert Image
This is prefered... This changes hotlinked photos into attachments. Good way to make sure a photo is always there. Also saves you from having to save it on your PC, then upload it.

And is a good way to get into trouble with copyright owners. Just saying, but I'd be very pissed if some jerk not only tried to hotlink my image but if the board owner autmatically stels it, i't be even more pissed.

    Email Idle Users
This basically emails people who have not visited in X many days / weeks / months ... You can set the time. It's nice, but not required.

I'm fairly sure someone already worked on that. Keep in mind that you want to ehck Opt-Out/Opt-In methods or you might get in trouble due to spam.

This adds a "back to top" button on the side. I know WBB has those on every post, but for the few places it doesn't have it; it maybe nice. It's not required.

This is something that can best be done by WoltLab directly. Maybe you can collect those places and create a suggestion?

Number of Posts to Send Personal Conversations
This is a must... Keeps spammers and general spammers from going straight to the pm box and sending out mass pm's. If there is no alternative to this, I'll seek someone to develop it.

This will be possible with WCF 2.1 and the autmatic assignement of user groups. You forbid conversations for registered users, create a user group that is allowed to send conversations and have every user autmatically assigned to that group when they have written X posts.

    Password Strength Check
This tells a user when they are joining or changing their password if it's strong or not. Not exactly required, but would be nice.

What about this plugin: Password Strength Meter ?

    Search Log
Allows me to see what people search for. Not required.

Yes, that's something a really miss, too. Maybe I can do something about that.

    Show Deleted
Shows all deleted post in an easy search. Not required, but helpful.

This is already possible, just clieck on "Moderation" in the user panel and then "Show deleted content".

    Moods
Would be nice, but not required... Displays user moods (happy, sad, relaxed, ect...).

    Check out EasyMood ;)

    Link Essentials

I had done that for WBB 3.1, for WBB 4.0 there is a plugin by @SoftCreatR: Replace URL by Name

  • @Netzwerg Thanks for your thoughts, but I'm not looking to debate morals or ethics. Read PM's is a must, because copyright laws (the arms reach of the USA), seems to be global and you can live anywhere you like; if people are sending PM to share illegal downloads, they're going to hold you accountable. Period.

So this is must. If no one has this developed, I'll need to find a developer who will be willing to have this made.

The automatical upload is also a must, because today you can hotlink a photo. That photo maybe something harmless like a cat. Tomorrow the source of that photo changes and it's suddenly gay porn. Or maybe you have a thread filled with photos and they all go "poof" and now you've got a thread filled with red X's.

Not looking for a debate. Will however need these developed. Will have them released here for free for others to use, once I've paid someone to develop them.

  • I didn't really want to drag you into a discussion of ethics and morale. Some things - like reading PMs - are illegal in germany. If you want to have such a plugin developed and release it in the Plugin-Store, be prepared for some serious outrage and shitstorm (you'll probably get a lot of dislikes). It was merely a warning that this community due to being primarily influenced by german law has a very strict morale attitude when it comes to privacy and copyrights. What you are proposing for images (copying them on your own server) can give you serious trouble with german law, so be prepared that that won't really be appreciated by some people.

I don't really want to make a ethics discussion out of it. My stance on that is clear, I think both ideas are unethical (and can also be illegal in my country), but your views on that can be different, which isn't bad. In fact, you might even be forced to do some things which are unethical due to your countries laws, which you will know better then me - and that's not your fault. I just wanted you to know what you are getting into with those things and that you can - and will - get some concerned or even outraged reactions to those proposals/requests. So take it just as a heads up ;)

Thanks for the heads up. I do appreciate what you are saying and what you are trying to do. I respect that the laws are different by location. And I imagine it will be controversial. I also imagine that it may give a negative impact.

But sadly it is an unavoidable necessity that I have the "read pm" add-on. Some of America's laws do seem to apply a global reach. Which in my opinion is wrong, since America (and any other country) is not the be all, above all, police force of the world... And yet, they sure do appear that way sometimes.

America has extradited people from other countries, including Germany, on the bases of its own laws (including copyright). This has included people not breaking their own sovereignty laws or being citizens of The US, but simply violating US laws and suddenly forcefully being applied and subject to them.

I personally think that's wrong. Each country should have it's own independent sovereignty, govern by its own independent laws, policed by their own authority, and not be subject to some offshore 3rd party. But the nature of what should be and what can be; don't always coincide.

But I do understand why it may upset some people. However, I will be looking to release this add-on and will include a warning, that it is up to the individual to decide if they need it and that it is up to them, themselves to inquire with their own laws when or if applying such an add-on.

  • If they let you send the e-mails with a normal SMTP server you can configure it in the ACP.

That would still require a mail server. We use only the basic php function to mail things out. There is no mail server (never will be).

So this is something we'll need to have developed. :)

  • Reading PMs is also illegal.

Not necessarily as laws do vary by location.

Although when we do release this add-on, we will respectfully include a warning informing people that it is their responsibility to comply with their own local laws.

Copying images without permission is illegal, too.

  • No. If you use the SMTP-Server from Mandrill (and that is what you want if I understand you correctly), then you can just enable this SMTP-Server. There is no local Mailserver needed.

We use the API key method as the registered email address (user name) and actual outcome email address is different (for security).

I'm unsure what would happen if we used the SMTP method (we would not want the actual email address known)

I forgot to add that this add-on also handles bounced e-mails and emails wrongfully marked as spam (puts such a user into an "inactive state" until they change their email address or change their email receive settings)

  • I've had my recipe photos that I take myself stolen as other people's recipe photos and even seen them in apps on my iPad, not nice!

Theres an seo mod that has a sitemap generator, it's the one that also fixes url structure.

My son did a you mod for my bb forum.

  • Clickable Rows

    Stop Spam Here
This is a must... Basically checks the StopForumSpam.com database when a user registers (joins). Good to prevent spammers and spam bots from joining.

So I don't think anyone said anything about the above. Are these already available or are these something I'll need developed?
