Can the mod tools be improved and the Edit Thread button scrapped or changed?

    WoltLab Suite Forum

I am finding the mod tools on Woltlab both very basic and hard to use.

I will add various comments to this post over the coming weeks, but for now, these are the main issues for today:

There is no mod tools/thread tools button which is displayed on the forum index page, forum pages, or within threads. I am finding this very difficult to get to grips with.

When I want to move a post to another thread, there is no button I can click to do it. Terrible.

To move a post, I have to leave the thread I am in, go back to the forum index, find the thread I want to move the post to, go into the thread and use the blue box in the bottom right to move. What a drawn out, complicated mess that is. How can my staff members be expected to do this every time?X(

On my vbulletin 5 forum, whether in the forum index, threads or posts, there were buttons I could click which carried out various functions like moving and copying posts, and I could carry out these functions immediately. A pop up menu would appear which gave me various options like copying posts, moving threads, merging threads and posts etc.

Can this please, please be improved for Woltlab with some urgency?

Additionally, I am finding having a separate edit thread button confusing, as are my staff.

On my old vb5 forum, the ability to pin, announce, close a thread etc was on the same button as all the other mod tools I described above.

Having to click the edit thread button to edit thread titles is confusing when there is already a edit button within the post. Why can't that be used to edit thread titles?

Can the use of a separate thread edit button be rethought OR changed and enhanced to include all the mod functions I described above.

    Many thanks!

    Jupiter

(Note: as per my other thread on things getting stuck and the bold button getting stuck, this has now happened here. I pressed F12, but no errors are showing.)

How is the forum supposed to know where these posts should go? I mean, if you have tens of thousands of threads, how do you select the thread to copy the posts into? That said, how is this different from copying files on your computer? The process of selecting the files to copy and then move over to the new location is what I would call "natural"?

Don't get me wrong on this, I'm genuinely curious if you have any better idea on how to implement the functionality in a more user-friendly way? Any suggestions are welcome - there is always room for improvement!

Additionally, I am finding having a separate edit thread button confusing, as are my staff.

Can you explain what are your issues with the separate button? All posts have the same consistent edit options, but changes to the thread are carried out using the separate button. I can see that it's something new when migrating from another software, but on the other hand this makes post editing more straightforward. It doesn't matter if it's the first or last post of a thread, the edit options are always consistent? Bonus for having the thread edit controls available on all pages of a thread, because they're not tied to the first post on the first page?

Despite using other forum softwares here and then, I'm not that big into the mod capabilities and therefore have a bit of a struggle to understand how much it actually differs. From my personal experience I know that there is a huge difference between working with them every day versus skimming over them to get an impression, not every shiny button proves to be useful for your everday work.

    Thank you for saying that.

Most software/tech people are excellent at making things, but don't actually use their own creations on a day-to-day basis, so as end users we see things very differently to how you might.

I am going to try and download my old vbulletin forum onto my computer and remind myself how their mod tools worked, then will come back to you on all of this. I will also get another IP demo and see how they do it too. So give me a week or two, then I'll give you some proper feedback.

Alexander, a belated reply here. I never worked out how to reinstall my old vbulletin forum to check the moderator functions, but can I make a few suggestions here?

1 - There is no option to PIN or announce a thread when in the thread index. Can this be rectified, please?

2 - As per my very crude picture below, the gorgeous rounded Woltlab avatars look messy when topics are pinned, moved, locked etc. Can you please consider moving these symbols elsewhere, as per my picture? It's not just purely cosmetic either, some of my members don't realise what topics are moved, or pinned etc until I tell them. Perhaps another consideration is to have a different coloured background for these kind of topics.

    Many thanks!

  • Announcements can be set via the "More Options" button.

That's within the actual thread, that's not what I meant. I mean the thread index, the list of threads.

These are the current mod functions you can do in the thread index:

As you can see there is no option to PIN or announce from this menu. It is extremely cumbersome having to enter each and every thread to carry out basic tasks.

Although Marc's suggestion is helpful, can I please request this function as originally requested.

Additionally, on other mod tool issues:

Can there be the ability to edit a publication date after a thread has been submitted for a future publication date?

And the follow on to that is, when I create threads for future publication and click submit, I get a notification in the moderation area that a post needs to be approved. It doesn't, because I created it! Can this be rethought?
