A short introduction of the changes concerning the new website

The long awaited new website will be released shortly. A first glance at the biggest changes for your information.

At first, according to customer requests, we have made the new licensing system much more flexible. The entry level price for one Burning Board license remains unchanged at $69.99 (19% VAT included). Customers will have the opportunity to extend their licenses with three service options for one year: Update Access, Update Access with Standard Support and Update Access with Professional Support.

In practice the new pricing list looks like this:

Legend

 a) If access is not yet expired.
b) If access is expired more than 3 months, or if there has never been access before.

* 19% VAT included

** Standard and Professional Support contain access to Updates and Ticket Support. Tickets will be answered within a guaranteed time frame of 48 hours with Standard Support and 12 hours with Professional Support, both within our office hours

Burning Board License

$69.99*

1 year Update Access

$39.99* a)

$49.99* b)

1 year Update Access with Standard Support **

$54.99* a)

$69.99* b)

1 year Update Access with Professional Support **

$99.99* a)

$134.99* b)

All additional options, e.g. Installation Service or Branding Free, keep their prices.

With the new website we will remove the download option for older Burning Board versions (version 2 and older) as well as the corresponding documentations. We encourage all users of those older versions to save a backup copy of their software and other files before the new website will be online. Additionally any technical support for older versions (Burning Board 2, Burning Board Lite 1, Burning Book) will stop and all Support Forum areas for those software products will be immediately closed when the new website is online, shortly after that we will remove those board sections completely. Please note also, that with the release of the new website all vouchers for plug-ins we offered will expire! In case you have not used your voucher yet we encourage you to redeem it before the new website is online.

In the past the different log-ins for the multiple website areas, e.g. Support Forum, Newsletter, Customer Area, have confused our customers. This is going to change with the new website, there will be only one central log-in, based on the log-in data from the Support Forum. If you are already registered in the Support Forum, you will not have to register yourself again any more. If you log-in to your customer area with your old account data you will be able to transfer your licenses to a new account.

We have considered many suggestions from our community for the new customers area. For instance you can now activate one separate user account for the support area per license. Serial numbers for licenses can now be newly generated manually if necessary. The new customers area now also offers a more comfortable control over your own support tickets. Also new is the possibility to write support ticktets for customers which have a license that contains no support option, at a price of $19.99 (19% VAT included) for a single ticket.

The year 2009 is drawing to a close and it was quite a successful year for us. We have released the best Burning Board of all times with Burning Board 3.1 "Volcano" and our sales have grown extraordinarily. The release of the plugins Blog und Gallery as well as styles like "Blue Space" und "Pure.Chrome" have also been a real success.

I'd like to use the opportunity to offer a raw outlook on the next year and explain whith projects we are busy with at the time and in the upcoming year. Please bear in mind, that not all projects covered in this topic are due to release in 2010. We have set up a good basis for community websites with our community framework and our framework based software Burning Board can already be extended with numerous community functions by a large list of plugins. In the long run we will continue to expand our product portfolio with even more community applications offering our customers further options to combine them with their community websites.

The start of the upcoming year will see our team to be expanded with new employees for customer services and development. We are already in talks with well skilled people who are eager to work with us, so we are confident to be able to present the new ones to you soon. The release of the new website is also scheduled for the beginning of the next year. Besides a new and up-to-date look we want to simplify purchasing and management of licenses. Additionally we want to expand our documentations area and offer a bugtracker to better handle bug messages.

We target the the release of Burning Board Lite 2.1 (Codename "Aurora") in the first half of 2010. This version will be based upon WCF 1.1 and bring a lot of new functions. Additionally we want to offer updates for Blog and Calendar in the first half-year. We have collected a large pile of suggestions and wishes for both applications posted by our customers and we are trying to implement a lot of them as soon as possible to make those applications even more attractive.

Furthermore we are still developing WoltLab Community Framework Version 1.2 (Codename "Maelstrom"). This version will invent some technical innovations being separately talked about at time in another entry in my blog. There will also be a new version of Burning Board based upon WCF 1.2, Version 3.2 code named "Dragon". The changes in this versions will not be such fundamental ones as in former versions, but we have gathered some nice ideas to enhance forum and the entire handling of it.

There will be also a complete new product in our portfolio, WoltLab Community Portal (Codename "Earthquake"). With our portal software you will be able to combine the many community applications on a central start page and let the user customize this page to his own wishes. The portal will offer functions to create your own pages and to integrate them into the site structure. Also you'll be able to embed special imformation from one application into another by a special "box-model".

Also completely new will be WoltLab Community Database (Codename "Excalibur"). This will be a modification of the database already operated as download database at our well known WoltLab Community. Users of the database will be able to offer their (optionally selected) users different files types for download. Also implemented will be familiar features like categorization, tagging, rating und comments.

We will inform you about the new products as well as the new versions of WCF and Burning Board more precisely over the year 2010. Please understand that we do not want to talk about the details of the innovations at this time. Finally i'd like to thank you all for keeping faith in us and wish all of you a merry christmas and a happy new year!

Changes in the WoltLab Management

As you might know, the WoltLab GmbH is being leaded by two managing directors, Arian Glander and Marcel Werk. This will change now: As of now Arian Glander has already his work for WoltLab at his own request and leaves us at December 31st 2009. After eight successful years at WoltLab he is looking for new horizons and wants to work on new projects. From January 1st Marcel Werk is the only managing director of WoltLab.

Burning Board 3.1 Volcano - the best Burning Board ever - has been released and can be purchased now. Customers with access to updates can download the update from their members area or directly through our update server. Volcano has more than 100 new features!

New user profile

The user profile has been completely redesigned to make your community more lively. Members can introduce themselves with their own "About me" text. The connection path shows how you know another member. The profile start page displays the most recent posts and activities of a user. The profile can be extended with additional functions.

Guestbook and Gallery for free

We are offering two free plugins for the profile: User guestbook and user gallery. The guestbook enables your members writing guestbook entries into other user profiles. Every user can manage their own guestbook by deleting unwanted entries or commenting single entries. The start page of the profile shows the last five guestbook entries.

Using the gallery members of your forum can publish own photos and share them with others, tags and albums can be used to categorise photos. Through the Google Maps integration a map displays the location where a photo has been taken, as long as the photo provides these data. Photos can be commented by other users, a slideshow presents all photos interactive.

Manage terms of use

Another free plugin adds a handy tool in your admin area to manage your forum's terms of use. If you change the terms you can force your members to agree to the new terms before they can continue using your forum.

Private Messages extended

The private messages between members can be displayed in a threadlike conversation. You can keep the whole dialogue in check without having to open each individual message. The new coloured folders and the new message filters help to organise your messages.

Improved Search

The calculation of relevant search results has been improved. The user can edit a search request; additional search options are available.

Numerous detail improvements within the forum

The forum contains many detail improvements. The new image viewer for instance shows larger versions of attached images without opening a new page. You can browse through all attached images of that page or use the slideshow feature.

Enable the new tagging system to tag threads or gallery photos. The quick reply offers an easy and fast way to answer threads without opening the full editor. The quote system has been extended: Quotes can be saved in a thread and used in other threads or even private messages. With a single click the paragraphs of a post are saved as individual quotes.

Improved Administration

The administration area has been polished in many ways: The restructured option menu and the new drag and drop features are only two examples. Many new managing tools have been added: Help topics, smiley and avatar categories as well as the forum's main menu can be managed through the admin interface. Owners of heavy traffic sites will enjoy the new flexible cache system: You can choose between file system, Memcache and eAccelerator.

New Plugin: Community Blog

Community Blog will be our second plugin next to Community Calendar that can be purchased. The plugin enables your members to write own blog entries within their profile. You can decide who can use the blog through the permission management. On an overview page the blogs of all users are combined. The entry price of the blog will be $29.99 and can be purchased through your members area.

New Style: Blue Space

The style WoltLab Blue Space offers a new display of your forum without changing any templates, showing the flexible power of our style system. The design is plain but still impressive through the header and all the small details. The style package contains the different colour versions blue, red, green and black. A business version in grey blue is also included. The package costs $39.99 and can be purchased through the members area as well.

All prices contain 19% VAT. Please note that not all languages are translated completely, some still contain English terms. This will be fixed with the next free updates.

WoltLab has started the "WoltLab Community" last weekend after an intensive development time. At community.woltlab.com WoltLab offers a central point for styles and addons. Everyone has the chance to participate by sharing his self-developed packages or plugins for WoltLab Community Framework and Burning Board 3.

"In the past our customers had to dig through many different forums to get their desired add-ons. Often new registrations and activations had to be made" Arian Glander CEO of WoltLab GmbH says. "With the WoltLab Community a look on a single platform is sufficient. A new registration is unnecessary, because you'll have the same log-in in our support forums. Another advantage is that all add-ons can be found and installed directly in the administration panel of your forum. We also support the translation of addons that they can be also used by our international customers."

A competent team of volunteers checks all add-ons for errors and security holes. Furthermore they assist developers with programming WCF plug-ins. In the future further improvements and new functions of this platform are planned.

The most successful Burning Board 3 community "wbb3Mods" has decided to be part of the community from the beginning – other communities announced to follow that.

Burning Board 3.0.0 released

The next generation of the discussion board software Burning Board is unveiled and can be purchased now! The new version sets several new standards and distinguish itself by a modern and secure technical implementation as well as a user-friendly user interface.
WoltLab Community Framework

The backbone for Burning Board 3 will be WoltLab Community Framework (WCF). The framework will be the basis for all future products from WoltLab in the area of community development. It is completely object orientated programming using PHP5, and includes support for module packages. The first product to make use of these functions will be Burning Board 3. The forum software will be comprised of smaller packages to be able to integrate into other programs at a later stage.

WCF will have a function that can run automatic updates of installed packages. Included is a process to update installed packages / modules from the originator (e.g. WoltLab) into the package database, thus creating a live update system for future versions. You will be able to have update packages automatically download and install. It will also be possible to manually search for updates and install individual packages / updates. A larger selected package will automatically download and install any smaller packages that it requires in order to function. You will be able to individually uninstall any particular package, so long as it is not in use by another larger package, commonly know a "Dependency Packaging" and can be achieved with the click of a mouse button.
Documented API and interfaces

One of the most important aspects of developing Burning Board 3 is the users' ability to adapt the program to their own specific needs. The forum software has a detailed API documentation and an event interface. This interface allows alterations of the software at basic levels without having to directly alter the source code.

A new accessible standard style

In the development of Burning Board 3 the coding will have new and improved standards. The HTML edition of the software will contain pure semantic source code. The design will be created completely by using CSS, overcoming previous restrictions imposed by styles that have been coded in other ways. Through CSS modification, users are provided with extreme control over the visual aspect of their forum. More changes will be possible without any template modification. As a result of the new coding style, a completely new standard style will be developed. Among these changes will be simplifying certain areas of the user interface. Hopefully this will make using the forum easier, especially for new and inexperienced users.

Use of standards

The forum software will naturally use templates for the HTML edition. The template engine used will already be included into the Community Framework. We have decided to use an engine based on that of Smarty. Smarty already offers a number of reliable programs and is a known developer within the community.

With Burning Board 3 we want to continue supporting the use of standards that have been set for such development. In addition to XHTML and CSS, we will aim to import and export data using XML.

Through better use of caching, Burning Board 3 will drastically reduce the number of database queries used. The start page of the forum can be produced in the same time frame as now, but only using 4 queries. Simultaneously the load of a single query would be considerably diminished through the optimization of the database structure.

Multi-language support

Burning Board can be run with multiple languages. Users may choose a language for writing messages in, or for filtering content. At this time, you can choose three different languages for the user interface (German, English, Italian). Further languages will follow.

E-mail support ticket system

With the release of Burning Board 3 we will also begin offering e-mail support via a ticket system. Access to e-mail support is given to owners of the new Burning Board 3 license. Furthermore the support forums are still in place for your technical questions.
